NEWARK, N.J. – Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Newark arrested a Brazilian national on March 19 in Newark, New Jersey, who is wanted in Brazil to serve a 17-year, 4 month prison sentence for intentional murder and attempted murder.
“This was an operation that required great care and planning on behalf of our Fugitive Operations Team as it involved a convicted murderer,” said ERO Newark Field Office Director John Tsoukaris. “They carried out the mission with utmost precision and professionalism. I’d also like to thank the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Newark for their assistance.”
Brazilian authorities convicted the subject on Aug 2, 2010, of intentional homicide and attempted homicide. The court awarded the fugitive 17 years and 4 months in prison.
The noncitizen unlawfully entered the United States on an unknown date, at an unknown location, and without being inspected, admitted, or paroled by a U.S. immigration official.
Brazilian authorities provided ERO Newark with an official copy of the sentencing and conviction document confirming the subject’s convictions.
After his arrest, ERO Newark served him with a notice to appear before a Department of Justice (DOJ) immigration judge. ERO Newark detained him. He will remain in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.
ICE officers make enforcement decisions on a case-by-case basis in a professional and responsible manner, informed by their experience as law enforcement officials and in a way that best protects against the greatest threats to the homeland.
ERO conducts removals of individuals without a lawful basis to remain in the United States, including at the order of immigration judges with the DOJ’s Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR). EOIR is a separate entity from DHS and ICE. Immigration judges in these courts make decisions based on the merits of each individual case, determining if a noncitizen is subject to a final order of removal or eligible for certain forms of relief from removal.
As one of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) three operational directorates, Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) is the principal federal law enforcement authority in charge of domestic immigration enforcement. ERO’s mission is to protect the homeland through the arrest and removal of those who undermine the safety of U.S. communities and the integrity of U.S. immigration laws, and its primary areas of focus are interior enforcement operations, management of the agency’s detained and non-detained populations, and repatriation of noncitizens who have received final orders of removal. ERO’s workforce consists of more than 7,700 law enforcement and non-law enforcement support personnel across 25 domestic field offices and 208 locations nationwide, 30 overseas postings, and multiple temporary duty travel assignments along the border.
