URF contestant proposes to study the use of bioplastics for wound treatment

A participant of the URF scientific competition intends to develop the first technology in Ukraine for the production of microbial bioplastics for use in medicine.

The author of the concept is Alina Kharchuk, a graduate student and leading engineer at the Antibiotics Department of the D.K. Zabolotny Institute of Microbiology and Virology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Her project is aimed at creating safe composites of microbial biopolymers in combination with biologically active compounds for the treatment of wound surfaces.

“During hostilities, military personnel and civilians are injured, including damage to large areas of the skin. A significant number of victims in conditions of lack of medicines and overload of medical facilities leads to a deterioration in wound healing,” the scientist emphasizes the relevance of her work.

Her scientific idea is based on a composite drug that will be created on the basis of microbial bioplastics containing polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), which will serve as carriers of antimicrobial anti-inflammatory, and analgesic substances.

“PGA’s biodegradability allows for a reduction in the number of surgical interventions in the affected area, which minimizes patient suffering and reduces the risk of wound infection. PGA can be produced in unlimited quantities, as these compounds are synthesized by bacteria,” the contestant notes.

The renewable resource of bioplastics, she adds, has a significant advantage when used in tissue reconstruction, as it does not require a tissue donor and eliminates the problem of an immune response during transplantation.

“So, for the first time in Ukraine, a cost-effective technology for producing biodegradable plastic based on PGA from bacteria that are safe for living organisms and the and the environment,” the concept says.
