Voice of America’s documentary, Faith in Freedom: The Journey of Muslim-American Candidates, won third place in the National Headliner Award competition. The film won in the category for broadcast or cable television stations documentary or series of reports on the same subject. This is a first time award for VOA in this competition.
Produced by VOA’s Midwest correspondent, Kane Farabaugh, and edited by VOA special projects editor, Elizabeth Arrott, the 30-minute film follows the 2016 campaigns of four Muslim-American immigrants seeking elected office in city, state, and national government across America. The candidates originally came to the United States from India, Jordan, Yemen, and Somalia, and ran for office in Illinois, Nevada, Michigan, and Minnesota respectively.
”The VOA filmmakers captured four remarkable stories in this documentary, so I am thrilled to see this exemplary work honored with this prestigious award,” said VOA Director Amanda Bennett.
The National Headliner Awards program was founded in 1934 by the Press Club of Atlantic City, New Jersey, and is one of the oldest annual competitions acknowledging journalistic excellence in the communications industry.
