Journey 1945: China’s Path to Victory, the vivid tale of two veterans of an elite “Flying Tigers” unit organized by the U.S. Government to aid China’s Nationalist Government against Japan during WW II, won a silver medal at this year’s New York Festivals International Television & Film Awards.
The 60-minute Voice of America documentary, produced by VOA Mandarin’s Daphne Dung-Ning Fan, weaves the moving stories of former “Flying Tigers” Patrick Chen and Robert Lee with archival footage and expert analysis of China’s struggle against Japan’s invasion.
At the awards ceremony in Las Vegas, VOA also earned several finalist certificates. A Single Step: Journeys of Women Leaders earned a finalist recognition in the Biography/Profiles category. Narrated by Academy Award winning actress Sally Field and produced by VOA Senior Executive Producer Beth Mendelson, the film profiles five visionary women — an educator, an environmentalist, a media advocate, a social entrepreneur and a public health innovator, who turned bold ideas into social action.
VOA won a finalist certificate in the Education/Instructional category for The Making of the Constitution, produced by Kelly Jean Kelly as part of the VOA Learning English series, The Making of a Nation. The series teaches U.S. history by telling the stories of major events and personalities since the country’s founding.
The VOA’s series U.S. Voting Rights Act also won a finalist certificate in the Special Report category. Produced by VOA reporter Chris Simkins, the series takes an in-depth look at the 1965 measure that outlawed racial discrimination in voting.
“These accomplishments are a true testament to the quality of work our journalists and staff put in each and every day. I am truly proud of all of our winners,” said Amanda Bennett, Voice of America Director.
